Transportation Department Accounting Intern
POSITION DESCRIPTION
A Transportation Department Accounting Intern is an unpaid position that performs a variety of clerical, accounting and physical activities of varying complexity. Duties include a wide range of tasks, such as filing, organizing, use of AMS Advantage/FIN, preparation of financial reports, clerical, and public communication via the telephone. The intern will learn from an assortment of Transportation Department Financial personnel through observation, on-the-job training, and a review of City of Mesa policies and procedures. The Transportation Department Accounting Intern performs data entry using AMS Advantage/FIN, research payment information and interprets accounting information from payment documents for input into AMS Advantage/FIN. The position will involve substantial computer work performed in a professional environment.
Responsibilities may also include receiving and distributing deliveries, assisting customers, and researching and processing payment documents.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Qualifications/Requirements: Requires any combination of training, education, or experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED, supplemented by college-level coursework in accounting or finance. The ideal candidate will currently be pursuing a career in accounting or finance in the public sector.
Students may be eligible for college credit, through their program of study, upon completion of the internship. Students are responsible for determining if their service will be eligible for college credit, obtaining and completing any required forms to receive credit and meeting any registration requirements for their college or university. Interest in a career in accounting or finance in the public sector is preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Communication: Communicates with City Employees, other volunteers, outside vendors, contactors and the general public.
Manual/Physical: Enters information into a computer workstation and operates a variety of standard office equipment such as copier and scanners.
Mental: Effective and efficient time management skills, excellent organizational and planning skills, attention to details, self-motivated and dependable, willing to learn work processes through on the job training.
Abilities: Perform internet research, enter data or information into a PC or other device: establish and maintain effective working relationships to all personnel within the organization and general public. Maintain a high level of accurace and pay close attention to details.
Time Commitment: 10-20 hours per week generally occurs on:
