Drivers for Kids and Families
It would be really wonderful and appreciated to have several volunteers the Program Coordinator (Tara Jordon) could reach out to when transportation becomes a barrier to accessing supports, opportunities and services to children and families.
We currently have 36 children aged 6-18 in our KidStart Mentoring Program (a support program like Big Brothers and Big Sisters). Volunteer would be contacted for driving kids on occasion. For example: Ride to swimming lesson once a week for 4 weeks (i.e. Wed at 4 pm), or ride to the food bank on occasion (if the family is stuck) and to appointments (i.e. Sometimes buses don't run, and/or a child can't get from school to a lesson in time.)
Volunteers would be screened and prepared by Tara. All families involved are safe and would be very grateful and welcoming to volunteers. Many program participants are coming form homes without vehicles and transportation can be a barrier.
Volunteers would be contacted by email and have the opportunity to say "yes" or "not available" for any date. For example "I'm hoping someone can pick up 2 kids - Susi age 6 and her brother age 9 from Ripple Rock School next Wednesday and drop them off at the pool for their lesson. Their mom will meet you there, but the bus schedule prevents them from travelling together in time. Please let me know if you can commit to this 15-30 minute driving request at your earliest convenience".
Photos of the volunteer would be shown to the children and photos of the children would be shown to the volunteer. Volunteer would carry an ID card.
