Dunedin Railway Station

We are hoping to do the below (only a draft)....we'd love to come and have a chat about what you think will work best.

  • The busiest times at the station are normally on the days cruise ships are in town (74 days in the coming season from NOV-APR). The busiest time on these days are from 1pm till 2.30pm (when the cruise ship train and the morning train arrive back and the 2pm Silver Fern trip and the afternoon Taieri Gorge Trains depart.

  • Daily: One (or two for company) people from 8.30am till 2.30pm. The peak times will be 8.45am till 9.30am (when the morning train departs) and from 1.30pm till 2.30pm. Depending on interest and volunteers preference this could two shorter shifts with a gap in the middle…or three 2 hour blocks etc.

  • Cruise ship days: As above but it is likely to be busy right through the day with the addition of the cruise ship train and the Silver Fern trips at 10am, 11,50am  and 2pm (much of which is booked on the day at the station). We will need to see how many people are useful but we expect at least 2 people right through and ideally more (4?) from say 12.30pm-2.30pm.

As standard we will ask people to come in tidy functional dress and we will have florescent jackets available with “How can I help – Dunedin Railways Station Ambassador” or similar on them.

If interest from a Victorian costume group and a Steam punk group come to fruition we may see some interestingly dressed Station ambassadors! We are open to this type of costume (or say someone dressed up as a traditional ‘guard’).

We can provide resources and knowledge about the trains, station, surrounds, buses and other tourist attractions.

The Dunedin Railways staff will always be around the station and in the booking office for help etc. The Ambassadors will have a point of contact (most likely to be Nikki Ford) who will be their go-to supervisor (but we are a friendly bunch and help isn't far away.

It is likely in September-October (once we have a pool of volunteers that we will arrange familiarization visits to some other attractions around the city.

  • Volunteers  will be interviewed

  • No reimbursements.
