ENVIRONMENTAL IMPROVEMENT - Walking Track Maintenance
JOB DESCRIPTION |
Volunteers are required for walking track maintenance including cutting back (using shears, hand saws and pruners) grasses, bush, axes and other overhanging materials that impede walking on tracks. Other parts of track maintenance also include drainage, track building and minor shaping of tracks using grubbers, shovels and spades. Persons must be able to carry own hand tools and food for the day as well as walk up to 1 to 1.5 hours each way. |
SKILLS REQUIRED |
Good tramping skills. Walking on tracks in all conditions Relatively fit and in good health. Able to work with a small team and support the balance of the team in all circumstances. |
LOCATION |
Within the environs of DCC and DOC tracks in both the Silver Stream and Silver Peaks Catchments. |
DAYS AND TIMES REQUIRED |
Every Wednesday, departing Dunedin about 8.30 am Contact will be made with the volunteer as to where pick up point and time of meeting may be. Return to Dunedin would be generally about 5 pm on the same day. |
DRESS CODE |
Tramping gear including small day pack. Warm clothes and a parka are always taken as conditions can change quickly in the Silver Peaks and Silver Stream catchments. Strong walking boots are important as conditions do become wet and slippery. |
SUPERVISION AND TRAINING |
GHTC will work with new volunteers until they have a good appreciation of what is required of them. Volunteers will always be part of a small group working together. |
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS |
Good fitness and health. |
