Straight Up Trust

TEACHING/TUTORING/ASSISTING - Volunteer Youth Worker

JOB DESCRIPTION

We need help for our staff Youth Workers & other volunteers who run a Youth Club either Monday (High School students) or Wednesday (Intermediate age students) evenings.

This includes helping run various fun activities & games (activity based learning - games with a point), build relationships with the young people, & possible (and if appropriate & approved) build a mentoring-type relationship with young people.

SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Empathy & relate-ability with young people/teens - you enjoy them.
  • A sense of humour, fun & challenge.
  • Be a positive role model.

LOCATION

Monday evenings - Bayfield High School, 2 Shore St, Andersons Bay

Wednesday evenings - the Carisbrook School Hall, 217 South Road, Caversham, Dunedin.

DAYS AND TIMES REQUIRED

Either each Tuesday evening or each Wednesday evening, 6.00 to 9.00 pm, from March through to November (but excluding school holiday time); plus three weekend camps over the year.

On Wednesday evenings, dinner is provided.

DRESS CODE

Casual but respectful (be a positive role model). Occasionally

sporty/outdoorsy.

SUPERVISION AND TRAINING

Tow training evenings in March, & a training camp in April (8-10), plus briefs & de-briefs before & after the evening club programme. Weekly breakfast gatherings for those that can make it. Other events during the year.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

There are up to three weekend camps each year - would be a big plus if you are able to do these as well. Own transport is a big advantage. We are a Christian organisation operating out of a Christian values base, so you'd need to be happy to work in that framework & context.

Volunteers will be interviewed, undergo police vetting and need to supply names & contact details of two credible referees who will attest to your suitability for this role with young people.
