COUNSELLING/MENTORING - Volunteer Youth Mentor/Worker
JOB DESCRIPTION |
We need help for our staff Youth Workers & other volunteers who run an after-school program with kids Years 5 & 6 on Tuesday afternoons 3-4:30 pm.This includes helping run various fun activities & games (activity based learning - games with a point), build relationships with the young people, & possible (and if appropriate & approved) build a mentoring-type relationship with young people. |
SKILLS REQUIRED |
Empathy & relate-ability with young people - you enjoy them. A sense of humour, fun & challenge. Be a positive role model. |
LOCATION |
Carisbrook School Hall, 217 South Road, Caversham, Dunedin. |
DAYS AND TIMES REQUIRED |
Tuesday afternoons 3-4:30 pm from July through to November/December (excluding school holiday time). |
DRESS CODE |
Casual but respectful (be a positive role model). Occasionally sporty/outdoorsy |
SUPERVISION AND TRAINING |
Part time youth workers provide briefs & de-briefs before & after the program. Weekly breakfast gatherings for those that can make it. Other events during the year with leaders from other clubs with Rock Solid are also held. |
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS |
Volunteers will be interviewed, undergo police vetting and need to supply names & contact details of two credible referees who will attest to your suitability for this role with young people. |
SKILLS THAT CAN BE GAINED FROM THIS ROLE |
Good interpersonal and communication skills. A non-judgmental attitude. Learning to take initiative and develop leadership qualities, with the ability to relate to young people. Personal satisfaction from a contribution to the community and the development of relationships with young people. |
