Required Training for Kitchen Helpers & Meal Services - Civil Rights & Safe Food Handling Training

Since Sarah's House is a Federally Assisted Program, it is a requirement that all volunteers and Sarah's House staff members that prepare and serve meals in Sarah's House commercial kitchen are properly trained per the guidelines set by the government.

During the first half of the training, the trainer will discuss Civil Rights & Responsibilities to ensure that volunteers and staff are aware of the following areas of compliance: 1) Assurances 2) Public Notification 3) Complaints of discrimination 4) Civil Rights 4) Customer Service 5) Conflict Resolution 6) Limited English Proficiency 7) Disability Discrimination 8) Compliance Reviews). The take away from this portion of the training is prohibit any type of discrimination against any of Sarah's House participants.

During the second half of the training, the trainer will discuss Safe Food Handling Procedures along with Sarah's House practices. This portion of the training is to ensure that the best food safety practices are implemented when providing food to the participants in the program. And the volunteers receive the proper knowledge to perform their tasks properly, how to interact with the clients, know how to navigate throughout the kitchen and storage spaces and utilize the equipment properly.

After the trainer completes the Civil Rights & Safe Food Handling portions of the training, volunteers and staff will receive a tour of the kitchen and its storage locations. Also, there is will Q&A throughout the entire training.

Please know that staff took into consideration many factors when designing this  1 1/2 hour (approx. time) training. As trainers, our goal for each person is to walk away feeling empowered with the proper knowledge, knowing they are supported and possess the proper resources to perform their tasks as best as possible when in the kitchen for a smooth and successful meal service.
