Programmatic - Read to Children (with Musical Skills)

Do you love reading aloud and comfortable singing basic songs to spread the joy of reading to children? San José Public Library is looking for volunteers to read to young children on Tuesdays at 6PM.

We would love to have your skills utilized in a literacy program.

Huge plus if you can do any of the following (but not required):

  • Read in another language such as Spanish or Vietnamese
  • Can play guitar or ukulele and bring their own instrument

How You Will Make a Difference

Sharing books with children demonstrates that reading is enjoyable and establishes a pattern of lifelong reading and learning. 

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Select age-appropriate books for reading aloud
  • Understand how to search the SJPL catalog for titles
  • Read aloud to individual children or a small group of children once a week for 30 minutes

  • Specialized training provided on how and why to read to children including tips on book selection for children of all ages

Commitment/Schedule

Tuesdays at 6PM to 6:30PM - must commit to the schedule between June 1 to August 15, but can start sooner than that.

Huge plus if you're able to cover others if needed on some Saturdays.

All volunteers must be willing to volunteer at least once a week for a 6-month duration. 

Prospective volunteers should:

  • Be comfortable engaging, reading, and singing with youth and families
  • Have strong oral communication skills
  • Be dependable, patient and flexible
  • Complete a fingerprint background check, at no cost to you. Only required if you are 18 years or older

Language Skills

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Vietnamese is a plus, but not required.

Qualifications Required

  • Age Must be at least 18+
  • Oral and written communication skills in English Must be at least Medium
