Field Work - Rattlesnake Responders

Purpose:
Desired outcomes: Timber rattlesnakes will be safely relocated away from homes. Homeowners will receive information on timber rattlesnakes and deterring unwanted snakes.
Impact this position will have: Increased survival of timber rattlesnakes in southeast Minnesota. Landowners in southeast Minnesota will have increased ecological knowledge.
Benefits to the Volunteer:
Gain experience handling venomous snakes, contribute to wildlife management in Minnesota.
Responsibilities:
Authorized work: Respond to calls for rattlesnake relocation. Follow protocol in relocating snake to ensure safety of humans and snakes. Communicate with homeowners about timber rattlesnake ecology and how to deter unwanted snakes.
Restricted work: n/a
Qualifications needed:
- Ability to walk over uneven ground
- Ability to stand, bend, stoop and carry objects
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds
- Past experience working with snakes
- Demonstrated ability to safely handle venomous snakes
- Current driver's license
- Ability to communicate with the public and discuss scientific topics in plain language
Safety training topics to be covered with volunteers:
- Ticks
- Heat and Cold Related Illness
- Hazard Recognition
- Poisonous and Hazardous Plants
- Handling of venomous snakes
Minimum Time Commitment:
1-2 hours for each relocation, as needed
