Expanded Learning Unit - Reading Tutor

The San José Public Library is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to serve as reading tutors in our Reading Partners program. We provide comprehensive training to ensure you feel prepared and supported. All tutoring sessions take place in-person at the Evergreen, Hillview, Seven Trees, and Village Square Branch Libraries. Join us in empowering young readers and making a meaningful impact on their literacy journey.

How You Will Make a Difference

As a tutor, you’ll provide one‑on‑one support to K-4th grade students, helping them strengthen essential literacy skills, build confidence through engaging conversations, and achieve academic success with guided instruction.

Volunteers are needed to:

  • Conduct one-on-one reading sessions for students in grades K-4 using the Reading Partners curriculum and digital learning platform
  • Build a positive relationship with your assigned student to create a supportive environment
  • Monitor and track student progress
  • Commit to two tutoring sessions per week, with each session lasting about 2 hours. A total weekly commitment of 4 hours
  • Attend all scheduled sessions consistently

Commitment/Schedule

Willingness to volunteer for about 2 hours, twice a week for a 6-month duration. Program duration September 22 - May 27, 2027. Run time accounts for prep, program (4-5 PM), cleanup, and note-taking time.
Fall quarter: September 22 - December 2, 2026
Spring quarter: January 20 - May 27, 2027

Evergreen Branch

  • Days: Mondays and Wednesdays
  • Times: 3:30 - 5:15 PM

Hillview Branch

  • Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Times:  3:30 - 5:15 PM

Seven Trees Branch

  • Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Times:  3:30 - 5:15 PM

Village Square Branch

  • Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Times: 3:30 - 5:15 PM

Prospective volunteers should:

  • Be comfortable engaging with youth and families
  • Be dependable, punctual, and responsible
  • Complete a fingerprint background check, at no cost to you. Only required if you are 18 years or older

Qualifications Required

  • Age Must be at least 15+
  • Oral and written communication skills in English Must be at least Medium
  • Online Orientation for On-site Volunteers Completed Must be Yes
