School supplies - Tree Cookie makers

Slices of various Minnesota species of tree branches

Purpose

Create class sets of tree cookies to help classroom teachers in Minnesota teach children how trees grow, factors that affect tree growth, and tree identification.

Why do teachers need tree cookies?

Teachers need sets of 30 tree cookies but don't have the time or tools to make them. A tree cookie is a cross section of a tree branch or trunk, typically 3-6 inches in diameter, that is sanded down to emphasize growth rings in a woody plant. Young children practice counting rings. Older children analyze rings to determine events and growing conditions that may have affected the tree. Students might also write stories based on the tree's life recorded its rings.

Benefits to the volunteer

Volunteers will practice basic woodworking skills and may feel a sense of accomplishment knowing they are helping teachers to connect children to the natural world.

This is a good solo or small-group activity that you will do on your own.

Responsibilities

  • Follow the instructions on How to Make Tree Cookies
  • Best species to use are pines, spruces, cedars, and sumac because of their distinct rings.
  • A classroom set is 30 cookies. You can make as many sets as you like, any time you like. You will need to provide your own materials, tools, and work space.
  • When you are finished, bring the cookies to the DNR office nearest you. Include a note that directs the DNR office to "send the cookies to the DNR Central Office, Attention: Project Learning Tree."  If you would like official recognition, please also include your name and contact information.

Qualifications needed

The volunteer must provide own tree branches or trunks and all woodworking materials (saws, sanders, etc.)

Minimum time commitment

There is no minimum or maximum time commitment
