Pulling Together - Lead Steward

As a Lead Steward, you would be the project leader for a given restoration site. You would welcome, train, and supervise other volunteers to ensure that all work is done in compliance with Saanich policies and guidelines and communicate with Saanich Parks staff on a regular basis. You would also act as an ambassador for Saanich Parks while at work parties, informing the public about restoration activities, park conservation, and the Pulling Together program.

Currently seeking Lead Stewards at:

  • Playfair Park
  • Cedar Hill Park
  • Goward Park

Responsibilities:

  • Work with staff to develop an approved restoration plan and schedule work parties
  • Direct and perform restoration tasks (such as removing invasive species, planting native species, spreading mulch, caring for trees etc...) in compliance with annual work plan
  • Welcome, train, and supervise other volunteers
  • Ensure all volunteers have signed a waiver and are aware of hazards and safe work practices before they begin work
  • Display a sign in the work area
  • Mark hazards with cones or flagging tape
  • Communicate with Saanich staff to report debris piles for pick-up or request special equipment (eg. weed wrench)
  • Talk to park visitors about ecological restoration, park conservation, and the Pulling Together volunteer program
  • Attend meetings and trainings with other Pulling Together volunteers
  • Keep signed waiver forms secure until submitting to staff
  • Report volunteer hours
  • Consult Saanich Parks staff about proposed changes, new methods or work areas, or for their ecological and technical expertise

Qualifications:

  • 19 years old or older
  • Well-developed leadership and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills (diplomatic, clear communicator)
  • Love for the outdoors and supporter of parks
  • Willing to get dirty working outdoors in various weather conditions
  • Physically fit enough to work on uneven terrain
  • Able to work well with others and give/take direction
  • Willing to complete a free background check with Vulnerable Sector Search

Commitment and Schedule:

A minimum of one year and preferably multiple years.
