As a public outreach volunteer with the Community Services Division, you’ll help more people access Saanich recreational programs and services. By sharing information about financial support for children, seniors, and low-income families, disability inclusion services, and free programming and events, you’ll help build a more connected and inclusive Saanich. This role is ideal for someone who cares about equity in their community, who loves being outdoors at events, and who enjoys talking with people from all walks of life.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Learn about the Community Services division’s funding, services, and programming
- With other volunteers, set up your event display (including tent, table, and chairs)
- Share information at community events and other public spaces
- Create a welcoming space for conversation and assistance
- Use active listening and empathy during conversations
- Redirect unhelpful conversations in a positive way
- Provide staff contact information as needed
- Record interactions, questions, and feedback to share with your supervisor
- Follow the Volunteer Code of Conduct and District Policies for Contractors and Volunteers (reviewed and signed during onboarding)
- Log your volunteer hours and feedback online
Qualifications:
- 19 years old or older
- Friendly, organized, and willing to learn
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Can speak and understand English at an intermediate level
- Ability to speak other languages an asset
Commitment:
This role will be busiest during late spring and summer. Shifts will be primarily on weekends during the day or weekday evenings. We request a minimum commitment of six months. A mandatory training session will be held in late May.
Working Conditions:
Outdoors during spring/summer, indoors during fall/winter. Volunteers will be sitting or standing for most of the shift. Limited lifting and carrying up to 40lbs possible but not required. Volunteers will work in small groups of 2-3, sometimes directly supervised and sometimes independently.

- Participate in an informal interview
- Submit paperwork: Waiver, Code of Conduct, and optional Photo/Video Release
Training and Orientation:
- In-person group training (anticipated late May 2026) will cover:
- strategies for effective public outreach
- funding, services, and programs offered by District of Saanich Community Services
- Ongoing communication with supervisor
