Naturalist Programs - Visitor Center Host


Purpose (why we are doing this)
Thanks to Visitor Center Hosts, visitors will choose trails to hike that fit their needs and intentions. They will be better informed about current happenings and natural features of the park. They may be inspired to connect more with the exhibits and feel a deeper connection to the ecology around them.
Responsibilities (duties and tasks)
- Provide excellent customer service to visitors at our state parks and trails.
- Talk with visitors about current happenings and natural features of the park.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining naturalist program gear, equipment and facilities (nature center, exhibits, bulletin boards, etc.).
- Assist with archiving, sorting, scanning and organization of interpretive materials (photos, articles, research, slides, etc.)
Restricted work:
The duties assigned to this volunteer position are laid out above. Tasks pertaining to other programs and projects at this park/trail or any other park or trail unit must be agreed upon in a separate Volunteer Agreement form.
Qualifications Desired (education, skill, experience)
- You are asked to work one 3-hour shift each month, either on Saturday (morning or afternoon) or Sunday (morning). The season runs from April-October, and it's okay to make up a shift if you have to miss a month.
- Experience with customer service is preferred.
Safety training topics to be covered with volunteers:
- Personal safety and security.
- Appropriate response to injured visitors and emergency situations.
- Others as needed.
Sign up:
- In-person trainings will be held in 2026 on April 18 and May 9, 2-4 p.m. You only need to attend one training. If you are a new VC Host, please don't sign up for shifts that occur before your scheduled training day.
