Park Volunteers - Naturalist Program Volunteer
Purpose (why we are doing this)
Desired outcomes:
To assist park/trail staff with providing interpretive services for park/trail visitors.
Impact this position will have:
To provide educational programs, services and/or materials to help park visitors develop a better understanding of the natural and cultural resources of this park/trail and of the management practices and tools used to protect these resources.
Responsibilities (duties and tasks)
Authorized work:
- To provide excellent customer service to visitors at our state parks and trails.
- Assist with research and development of educational materials such as newsletters, brochures, handouts and bulletin board content.
- Lead naturalist program activities such as hikes, talks, walks, campfire programs and roving interpretation.
- Assist with cleaning and maintaining naturalist program gear, equipment and facilities (nature center, exhibits, bulletin boards, etc.).
- Assist with archiving, sorting, scanning and organization of interpretive materials (photos, articles, research, slides, etc.).
Restricted work:
The duties assigned to this volunteer position are laid out above. Tasks pertaining to other programs and projects at this park/trail or any other park or trail unit must be agreed upon in a separate Volunteer Agreement form.
Qualifications Desired (education, skill, experience)
- For volunteers leading programs, experience working with youth and adult audiences is preferred.
- Repeat volunteers are encouraged to participate in the annual statewide naturalist training offered each May.
- Repeat volunteers are encouraged to consider participating in the Minnesota Master Naturalist volunteer training for the biome in which this park/trail is located.
