Community Science Programs - Parks, Monarchs & Milkweeds
Due to a marked decrease in population, the monarch butterfly is garnering nationwide support with conservation efforts. Boise Parks & Recreation is doing its part with a community science program - Parks, Monarchs & Milkweeds - that engages volunteers in milkweed site monitoring for the purpose of collecting data for inclusion in a national database.We will kick things off with an orientation on Saturday, June 6, at 9:00 a.m. On this date, volunteers will receive their monitoring assignment and training on how to monitor their site for monarch activity. Monitoring equipment will be provided, and must be returned at the completion of the migration period.
Volunteers are asked to commit for the entire migration season, which ranges from the first of June through mid-September. Volunteers are encouraged to visit their assigned milkweed patch once a week, on their own time. However, we do understand that family other commitments may cause interruptions in data collection.
Qualifications Required
- Volunteer Handbook Review Must be Complete
- Volunteer Waiver Must be Complete
- Volunteer's Age Must be at least 16
