PURPOSE: Long-Term Care Recreation Program
Volunteers in the Long-Term Care Recreation Program play an essential role in enriching the lives of residents by fostering meaningful connections and providing support that contributes to their overall well-being. These volunteers assist in creating a welcoming and engaging environment through recreation-based activities that promote physical, mental, and emotional health. They engage with residents directly, supporting recreation therapy staff by facilitating group or one-on-one activities, offering companionship, and helping residents participate in programs designed to enhance their quality of life.
Volunteers in this program embody a Resident and Family-Centered Care approach, prioritizing communication and empathy. They contribute to a positive and supportive environment, helping residents feel valued, entertained, and engaged during their time in long-term care.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Start of Shift:
- Arrive on time and clock-in on MyImpact Timeclock in the designated volunteer room.
- Wear appropriate volunteer attire, including a vest and ID badge.
- Ensure you have necessary resources, such as activity materials or a schedule of planned events.
- Check in with Recreation Therapy staff to review the day’s activities and priorities.
During Shift:
- Support group activities, such as games, music, arts and crafts, or fitness sessions.
- Provide one-on-one companionship for residents, including reading, chatting, or assisting with leisure activities.
- Assist residents with participation in activities, ensuring accessibility and comfort.
- Monitor resident engagement and provide feedback to staff about their participation and well-being.
End of Shift:
- Return all activity materials and resources to their designated locations.
- Clock-out on MyImpact Timeclock and record any relevant feedback or suggestions.
INTENT OF VOLUNTEER TRAINING SHIFT
The purpose of the training shifts is to familiarize volunteers with the Long-Term Care Recreation Program's operations and prepare them for their role in enhancing residents’ experiences. During training, volunteers will gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to serve effectively in this program.
Training will focus on:
- Volunteer Sign-In and Sign-Out processes.
- Equipment and activity resource usage and management.
- Understanding resident-centered care principles and engagement strategies.
- Program logistics, including assisting with recreational activities and documenting feedback.
- Building connections with residents, peers, and Recreation Therapy staff.
- Direct Supervision: Provided by Recreation Staff as they lead the daily programming
- Indirect Support and Supervision: Provided by VR Department staff whereby all scheduling is managed, communications, performance, etc.
- Absence Reporting: All volunteers must communicate directly to: ERHvolunteerresources@fraserhealth.ca
TRAINING SHIFT REQUIREMENTS
- Complete two full training shifts for designated day and time

- Complete all program-specific training qualifications as outlined on your MyImpactPage.
- Review and adhere to the Program Activity Position Description and ensure all qualifications under your MyProfile tab are met.
