Volunteer with the District of Saanich

Join our popular social Bridge program at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre! Duties include light set-up, welcoming participants, encouraging positive and respectful gameplay, and joining games in need of another player. Volunteers must know how to play Bridge.

Responsibilities:

• Set up playing cards and scorecards
• Welcome regular players and engage new players
• Record number of participants
• Join a game if numbers allow
• Assist with table rotation and help prevent confusion
• Encourage participants to be positive and respectful
• Report any negative social behaviour to Programmer, who will follow-up
• Follow the Volunteer Code of Conduct, District Policies for Contractors and Volunteers, and Child/Vulnerable Persons Protection Policy (which you signed or reviewed during onboarding)
• Log your volunteer hours online

Qualifications:

• 19 years old or older
• Knows how to play Bridge
• Friendly personality
• Patient and supportive with older adults
• Can speak and understand intermediate English

Commitment and schedule:

Shifts are once per week on Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday from 1:00pm – 4:00pm at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre. Please choose which day works best for you. The program runs year-round and we ask for a minimum commitment of four months. Of course, we can accommodate appointments and vacations with advance notice.

Working Conditions:  

Indoors. Volunteers will mostly be seated while playing but moving around the room is required during table transitions. Volunteer will be working independently, with staff onsite if needed.

Application Process:  

• Create a volunteer profile online (10-15 minutes)
• Participate in an informal interview
• Complete a free Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
• Submit paperwork: Waiver, Code of Conduct, and (optional) Photo/Video Release 
• Attend an onsite orientation (30 minutes)
