Volunteer with us!
Short Back & Sidewalks supports people experiencing poverty and homelessness through haircuts and grooming, free of charge and free of judgement.
Our mission is to provide haircuts to EVERYONE, not just those who can afford it.
We work alongside homelessness service providers and volunteer hairdressers and barbers, providing friendly and attentive hair-cutting experiences.
We believe that everyone has something to contribute, and that you get back as much as you put in — and more — when you volunteer with us.
We're currently seeking community-minded individuals with specialised skills to join our mission at Short Back & Sidewalks. We're particularly interested in volunteers with expertise in hairdressing, barbering, marketing, communications, photography, and other relevant areas. Your unique talents and dedication will greatly enhance our ability to deliver impactful services to those in need.
We ask our volunteers to make a commitment to regular shifts on a fortnightly or monthly basis, ensuring continuity and quality in the services we provide to those in need.

FAQs
What is the volunteer commitment?
- We ask our volunteers to make a commitment to regular shifts on either a fortnightly or monthly basis. These shifts are usually 2-3 hours in duration. Volunteering regularly helps build relationships and trust with the people who use our services.
Where do you deliver your services?
- We work on site with qualified homelessness service providers such as Passages and Tranby, and in spaces that are safe for both our volunteers and the people having their hair cut.
- We’ve found that meeting in safe, familiar spaces often with existing service providers, creates a bigger impact on those in need.
Can I only volunteer during work hours?
- No. We operate services during times that are most convenient to our volunteers, usually outside of peak business hours and most frequently when volunteers have their days off.
Do you require only barbers?
- Not at all! If you're trained to cut hair, we'd love you to volunteer with us, hairdressers and barbers alike.
- We also have plenty of volunteer roles that don't involve cutting hair, such as service facilitation, volunteer rostering, and fundraising.
