Hello %%1 %%2

Thank you so much for considering volunteering at Potter Park Zoo. My name is Kelly Gibson, and I am the Volunteer Coordinator here at the zoo. We are currently pausing acceptance of new volunteer applications until mid-to-late March of 2021. In the meantime, please take a look at some general information about the process below and check back in the Spring. I look forward to receiving your application then.

Best regards,

Volunteer On-boarding Process:

For individual volunteers 18 and older, the next step in the process is you will soon receive an email request from TheAdvocates@SterlingVolunteers.com to complete a required background check.  This check does not apply to anyone under 18.

Please note:  The minimum age to volunteer is 14.   For those ages 14-15, a parent or guardian must be present each time you volunteer (UNLESS – you are part of the separate Summer Zoo Teen Program or Summer Junior Zookeeper Program) AND this parent/guardian must also go through the volunteer application process with you, including the online orientation. If you are 16-18 years old, a parent/guardian does not need to be present when you volunteer, however, a parent/guardian must do the the volunteer orientation with you.

Once I have received your background check results and have approved your application, you will be invited to complete a required online orientation.  After you complete the online portion of orientation, I will send you an email to schedule the in-person portion, consisting of a brief tour of the zoo, receiving your volunteer T-shirt and collecting the $20 Volunteer Orientation Fee.  This fee covers the cost of on-boarding and your uniform t-shirt.  After we meet, I will set your profile to "accepted" and you will be able to see all of the opportunities available to volunteers year round.

If you have any questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I am more than happy to help! Thank you again for generously thinking of Potter Park Zoo for your volunteer service. I look forward to talking with you soon.
