Volunteer Policies

Citizen Support Services Policies:

Seniors & People with Disabilities

1.  Screening:

As part of our duty to protect Citizen Support Service’s clients, volunteers must successfully be screened through an interview, criminal record check and references.  A criminal record search will be required when filling positions considered having or potentially having, interactions with vulnerable persons, in particular in one-to-one situations.  I consent to a Criminal Record Search and Reference Check as a condition of volunteering for Citizen Support Services with the City of Burnaby.

a) Minimum Age Requirement for Volunteering with Senior's and People with disabilities is:  16 years old

2.  Insurance:

The City of Burnaby provides a modest Group accident insurance program for its volunteers.  The coverage provides for a payment if they are injured or disabled while performing their assigned duties (or to their named beneficiary for loss of life).  There is limited or no coverage for volunteers that are 80 years of age or older.

3.  Legal Liability

Volunteers have a legal duty to take reasonable care in their conduct or behavior at all times.  This includes the duty to:

  • follow the requirements of the volunteer job description
  • act without discrimination
  • maintain confidentiality and privacy
  • report suspected abuse of children or seniors to your CSS coordinator

4.  To perform my volunteer duties to the best of my ability and according to the specifications of my job description(s).

5.  To follow all the Citizen Support Services rules and procedures including confidentiality of client information as outlined in the Volunteer Orientation Manual.

6.  To meet time and duty commitments or to provide adequate notice so that alternate arrangements can be made.

7.  To act at all times as a member of the team responsible for accomplishing the mission of Citizen Support Services.

8.  Upon completion of volunteering with Citizen Support Services, I will return my name badge.
