Volunteering at Taber Adult Learning

Thank you for your interest in becoming a Volunteer Tutor!  

Our Tutors:

  • Assist adult learners improve basic literacy and learning skills.
  • Focus on the learner’s immediate needs are.  This could include conversational English, reading, writing, and more.

Successful applicants are:

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Confident in reading, writing and speaking English.
  • Respond creatively and patiently to meet the learner’s English Language Learning needs.
  • Have empathy for English language learners and Adult Literacy Learners.
  • Is sensitive to different cultures and language backgrounds.
  • Is reliable and trustworthy.

Steps to Become a Volunteer:

  • Submit an application.
  • Meet with the Volunteer Manager.
  • Obtain a Police Information Check.
  • Attend an introductory orientation session.
  • Assist learners to meet their learning goals.
  • Attend several volunteer professional development learning sessions throughout the year.

We ask that you commit to 1 - 1.5 hrs/week.  Placements may be short term (2 weeks) or long term (4 month period).  We will provide all the training you need to be successful, and work with you to accommodate your availability.
