HIAS Pennsylvania Social Services
Volunteer Overview and Onboarding Process
Volunteer Engagement Philosophy
HIAS Pennsylvania (HIAS PA) offers social and legal services to immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. HIAS PA relies upon the compassion, expertise, and commitment of volunteers to enhance programming quality and to address timely needs. Moreover, volunteers serve as a voice in the community by recruiting new volunteers, educating about immigration-related issues, and pushing for social changes to make and keep Philadelphia a welcoming city for all. HIAS PA invites all who wish to volunteer and does not discriminate based on race, color, age, gender, sexual orientation, national/regional origin, language or disability.
Volunteer Process
HIAS PA works with individuals representing a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We want you to feel prepared and confident to handle situations. Therefore, all volunteers must attend a New Volunteer Information Session to learn how volunteers can best assist clients’ social integration process. After the information session, staff and volunteers will find the best position. Note we have limited evening and weekend opportunities. Volunteers will shadow other volunteers or staff members and receive program-specific details. HIAS PA will offer chances for ongoing training and provide other resources to deepen volunteers’ understanding of refugee populations globally and in Philadelphia.
HIAS PA benefits from volunteer labor and we commit to supporting and respecting our volunteers.
