In addition to the Volunteer Position description, selection criteria for a volunteer may include:
- The ability to listen and 'be' with a person who has a terminal illness
- Emotional maturity, warmth, empathy, tact and discretion
- Respect for confidentiality
- Being non-judgmental, flexible and reliable
- Have resolved their own losses
- Have a personal support network
- Respect for all beliefs that may differ from their own, including religious
- Ability to work as a member of the palliative care team
- Ability to handle strong emotions
- Ability to affirm life and enjoy living
- Ability to care for themselves
Due to the challenging roles required and responsibilities expected from a volunteer, the following people may not be suitable at the time of applying:
- People who have had a close friend/relative die in the last two years
- People undergoing a life crisis
If either of the above situations applies to you, please indicate this in your application and a volunteer coordinator will discuss your circumstances with you when your application moves to the interview stage.

Please note that if you have a current Working with Children Check, National Criminal Record Check or documentation evidence of any vaccination requirements you may upload them on your application form. You DO NOT HAVE TO upload electronic image/files of these at the time of completing your application. After your application has been accepted you will be able to add such documents to your profile at any time under your volunteer profile.
