Volunteer Policies & Agreement
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the GVFB!
We are accepting individual volunteer applications for roles that help our operations and the community. Click here to view the current opportunities and their schedules. By volunteering with us, you actively support our mission of providing healthy food to those in need.
Fall Volunteer Requirements:
- Volunteer regularly (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly)
- Make a commitment from November to January (option to extend longer)
- Accepted applicants will attend a mandatory volunteer orientation
Burnaby Orientation - 8345 Winston Street:
- October 22, 2:00 pm to 3:45 pm
- October 24, 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm
- October 25, 10:00 am to 11:45 am
- October 30, 6:00 pm to 7:45 pm - Youth Volunteers Only (ages 15-17)
Vancouver Orientation - 3454 Lougheed Hwy:
- October 23, 2:00 pm to 3:45 pm, 5:30 pm to 7:15 pm
- October 29, 5:30 pm to 7:15 pm
- November 7, 9:00 am to 11:45 am
Please read the following before you submit an application.
General Volunteer Requirements:
- Be 18+ years of age for food distribution;
- Be 18+ years of age for food preservation;
- Be 16+ years of age for fresh food sort;
- Be 16+ years of age for agencies restocking;
- Be 15+ years of age for warehouse roles;
- Be a resident of British Columbia;
- Complete a Criminal Record Check (CRC) during the orientation process.
Volunteer Agreement:
- I will act honestly and follow the highest standards of ethical behaviour when interacting with other volunteers, clients, staff, and community partners.
- I will arrive on time and commit to an entire shift unless an absence is unavoidable, in which case I will refer to the cancellation policy.
- I will accept directions and decisions made by GVFB staff and complete all duties diligently.
- I will report unsafe conditions and practices to GVFB staff.
- I will support clients, community agency partners, GVFB staff, and other volunteers with patience, respect, and dignity.
- I will not take photos of clients and will receive consent from other volunteers and GVFB staff before taking photos.
- I will maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive GVFB information I may learn or use to perform my volunteer role.
- I understand that I cannot simultaneously maintain active volunteer status and active GVFB client status.
- I agree that by submitting an individual volunteer application, I have read and accepted all volunteer requirements and the Volunteer Agreement.
- I further acknowledge and agree that if I do not follow the GVFB policies, I may be asked to temporarily or permanently remove myself from all GVFB volunteer opportunities.
