Youth Justice Committee Volunteer Eligibility Requirements and Commitment
Volunteers play an important role at Calgary Youth Justice Society through their gifts of time, energy and talent.
So thank you for your interest in being a Youth Justice Committee Member.
To be a Youth Justice Committee (YJC) Member you must meet the following requirements and commit to the following:
- Be 25 years or older
- Complete a Police Check including Vulnerable Sector Search
- Complete an Intervention Record Check
- Able to volunteer for a minimum of 1 year
- Attend 10 hours of initial training (3 sessions over 3 separate evenings)
- Sign an Oath of Confidentiality (see Oath here)
- Attend approximately 1 to 3 “panels” per month. Panels are a meeting where the young person and their family meet with YJC members and facilitate the Extrajudicial Sanctions Program
- Attend Youth Justice Committee meetings (approximately 2-4 meetings/year)
- Attend information and training sessions throughout the year
- Being open minded and willing to learn
*Please note due to the COVID-19 pandemic all volunteer training, panel meetings and YJC meetings are currently being conducted online
Any individual with the following is not eligible to volunteer:
- Criminal justice involvement (charges, convictions, incarceration) within the past 5 years
- Investigated for and/or charged or convicted of child abuse or any other offence involving children, youth or vulnerable persons
- In patient treatment for mental health or substance abuse within the past 2 years
- Used illegal drugs within the past 2 years
