Dementia Australia was founded by volunteers and has an ongoing commitment to nurture volunteer involvement. As such the organisation recognises, genuinely values and supports the role played by volunteers in the provision of services to the community and is committed to developing and promoting
quality volunteer management. The benefits of voluntary contributions are many and impact on the volunteers themselves, the employees who work with them and the wider community. Dementia Australia recognises that the cooperative relationships formed between volunteers, paid employees, individuals, families, groups and local government, promote social cohesion and contribute to the development of strong, resilient and sustainable communities and community centres.
Dementia Australia respects the rights and responsibilities of volunteers and has developed the Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities form in line with the guidelines outlined in the Volunteering Australia National Standards for Volunteer Involvement 2015.
All potential volunteers will be screened to ensure appropriate skills and fit for the position which they wish to undertake. A police check will be required to be undertaken on all volunteers except for volunteers at major events.
Within the Volunteer Management framework, the resourcing and management of volunteers will be undertaken similarly to that of employees and therefore many Dementia Australia policies and procedures relating to our Human Resources will apply.
In resourcing and managing volunteers, Dementia Australia will:
- Maintain appropriate Public Liability and Personal Accident Insurance cover for people engaged as volunteers
- Be supervised by appropriately skilled workers and where relevant, receive appropriate specific training
- Provide sufficient information for potential volunteers to make an informed decision about the match with the role, including the need for a Police Check if required
- Comply with Diversity and Recruitment policies when recruiting or screening prospective volunteers
- Ensure volunteers are reimbursed for any out-of-pocket expenses incurred while performing their roles. Unless negotiated otherwise, transport to and from the work location will not be reimbursed
- Appropriately recognise and thank volunteers
- Ensure each volunteer has:
- An up-to-date volunteer position description which clearly sets out the extent and scope of their role including the reporting line
- An appropriate orientation
- A clear statement of Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities developed and endorsed by Dementia Australia
- A safe workplace with the correct tools and equipment to safely fulfill their role
- On-going support and supervision

If you do not agree to the foregoing, please identify yourself to Dementia Australia prior to volunteering.

Dementia Australia values your support and commitment as a volunteer. The wellbeing of all event participants, clients, volunteers, and staff is critical to us as an organisation.
We understand if your circumstances or readiness to volunteer changes. Please update us as soon as possible.
Before you volunteer at our event or program, we ask you to carefully consider the following information.
Social distancing
Social distancing includes:
• Staying at home when you are unwell
• Staying 1.5 metres away from others
• Avoid touching others, such as shaking hands or hugging
Hand hygiene
Good hand hygiene is an important measure to avoid the transmission of COVID-19. Handwash with soap and water or use hand sanitiser as needed.
If supporting clients, you may be asked to assist them in modelling and encouraging hand hygiene. Speak with program staff if you need more information.
Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
Respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette must be followed at all times:
• Cover your nose/mouth with disposable single-use tissues when coughing, sneezing, wiping and blowing the nose and dispose of tissues appropriately.
• If no tissues are available, cough or sneeze into the inner elbow rather than the hand.
• Hands must be washed with soap and water after coughing, sneezing or using tissues. If no soap and water is available, please use hand sanitiser.
• Keep contaminated hands away from your face, especially around your mouth, eyes, and nose.
• If supporting clients, you may be asked to remind them about respiratory and cough protocols. Speak with program staff if you need more information.
Face masks
Whilst event and program organisers will be doing their utmost to uphold the 1.5 metre social distancing rule, volunteers are welcome to wear a face mask as an extra precaution. Face masks will be available for all volunteers and there maybe instances where they must be worn if supporting clients.
I will adhere to the following COVID safe procedures:
- If I am unwell on the day, I will not attend my volunteer shift and I will notify the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible.
- If I become unwell while volunteering, I will notify a staff member of Dementia Australia and leave the event or session immediately.
- If I become unwell with COVID-19 within 48 hours of volunteering at a program, I will update the Volunteer Coordinator.
Before my volunteering shift, I will update Dementia Australia staff if the following occurs:
- I have been diagnosed with COVID-19 within a 7 day window prior to my volunteering shift.
I understand I may be asked to self-exclude from volunteering should any of the above transpire for the time stipulated in current government guidelines.
Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance only covers injury and not illness. Dementia Australia will have procedures in place across all its operations to lessen the risk of contracting COVID-19 but cannot guarantee that all risk is eliminated. It may be challenging for a person living with dementia to always demonstrate COVID-Safe etiquette.
I understand and agree to abide by the requirements outlined in this document. I understand the risks and controls in place for managing potential COVID-19 exposure at Dementia Australia and understand Dementia Australia cannot be held liable should I contract COVID-19 while volunteering.
