Infomation for Youth Foster Volunteer Applicants
The youth foster volunteer program is designed to provide a meaningful hands-on opportunity at the OHS for youth ages 14-18, with an interest in animal welfare. The program allows youth to learn about animal care and enrichment, and then provide a loving foster home for a rabbit in need while earning Ontario Community Involvement Hours required for graduation!
Youth Volunteer Requirements:
- Youth volunteers must be between the ages of 14-18 years old;
- A parent or guardian must oversee the foster placement;
- Youth and parent or guardian must be comfortable handling animals;
- Show proof of spay or neuter and up-to-date vaccinations for current pets;
- Have a separate room to isolate a foster animal;
- Have time to care for foster animals;
- Agree not to travel with the foster animal nor take the foster animal anywhere that has not been approved by an authorized OHS employee;
- Access to a vehicle and ability to transport foster animals to the OHS as needed;
- Abide by the foster agreement signed upon joining the program;
- Both youth and parent or guardian attend foster orientation;
- Youth attend an interactive, educational workshop; and,
- To earn volunteer hours, youth must complete daily logs and a final reflection (template sheets are provided during the educational workshop). Daily logs take 5 minutes to complete, final reflection takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
All applications are screened to ensure they meet the minimum requirements for the position. This is a highly sought after opportunity for youth, and we typically have a high volume of applicants.
