Special Event or Short-Term Volunteer Participation Agreement

This Volunteer Participation Agreement (“Agreement”) is made between the volunteer (“Volunteer”) and the County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation (“County”) and applies to participation in any and all special event or short-term volunteer activities, including but not limited to:

  • Tree and native plantings
  • Trail work and maintenance
  • Park beautification
  • Invasive plant species removal
  • Habitat restoration
  • Park clean-up and beautification
  • Information and outreach booths
  • Community celebrations and seasonal events

1. Volunteer Role and Responsibilities
I agree to provide volunteer services to the County without compensation. I understand that my participation may involve physical activity, use of hand tools, outdoor work, and public interaction. I agree to follow all instructions from County staff and to comply with all applicable safety protocols and site-specific guidelines.

2. Attire and Safety
I understand I must wear appropriate clothing, including closed-toe shoes and weather-appropriate attire. For certain tasks, additional protective gear may be required, and I agree to wear such gear when directed. I acknowledge that participation may involve physical exertion, environmental exposure, and risks of personal injury or property damage.

3. Voluntary Participation and Medical Fitness
I certify that I am voluntarily participating and that I am physically and mentally fit to perform the activities assigned. I agree to inform the County on-site supervisor immediately if I feel unwell, unsafe, or unable to complete an assigned task.

4. No Reimbursement or Property Coverage
I understand that I will not be reimbursed for time, travel, or any personal equipment used during my volunteer service. I understand that the County is not responsible for loss or damage to my personal belongings while volunteering.

5. Photo, Video, and Media Release
I grant the County permission to take photographs, video recordings, or audio recordings of me during volunteer activities and to use these materials for promotional or informational purposes in any media, including but not limited to County publications, websites, and social media platforms, without compensation or further notice.

6. Indemnification and Hold Harmless
To the fullest extent permitted by California law, I agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the County of San Diego and its officers, employees, agents, and volunteers (“County Parties”) from and against any and all claims, demands, damages, liabilities, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorney’s fees) arising out of or in any way related to my participation in volunteer activities under this Agreement, except for claims resulting from the sole negligence or willful misconduct of the County Parties, as determined by a court of competent jurisdiction.

7. Acknowledgment and Waiver
I acknowledge that volunteering involves inherent risks, including risk of injury or illness. I freely and voluntarily assume all risks associated with participation. I understand that this Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted under applicable law, including the California Volunteer Protection Act (Business & Professions Code §§18950 et seq.).
