Foster Parent Requirements, Policies, and Guidelines:
- Foster parents must live within 60 minutes of the shelter and must be available to bring the foster animal to the SHS clinic in case of an emergency.
- Foster parents must be over 18 years old. Children under 18 are not permitted to be left alone with foster animals.
- All resident animals must be spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccines. Vaccine history is required. Resident animals must never be left unsupervised with foster animals.
- Foster parents must be able to keep foster animals separate from resident animals. Any introductions are at the foster parent’s discretion and must be conducted slowly, in a controlled manner, and under supervision. SHS cannot guarantee the health or behavior of any animal; taking a foster animal into the home constitutes acknowledgment of this risk. A minimum two-week quarantine from resident animals is strongly recommended.
- Consistent, respectful communication with the Foster Care Coordinator is required by replying to emails, text messages, and phone calls within 24 hours.
- Foster parents must abide by the policies and procedures of the Spokane Humane Society foster program detailed in the Foster Handbook.
- A Background Check Form and Volunteer Liability/Handbook Signature Page must be signed prior to taking home your first foster pet.
