Emory Healthcare Labor Support Volunteer Program Requirements

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Emory Healthcare (EHC) Labor Support Volunteer (LSV) Program pairs trained volunteers with laboring parents to promote comfort, satisfaction, and positive birth outcomes, while offering students valuable experience in labor support and exposure to professional caregiving on the unit.
This year, EHC is hosting LSVs at Emory Decatur Hospital (EDH), Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) and Emory Johns Creek Hospital (EJCH).
As of July 1, 2026, EDH and EUHM locations are FULL. EJCH is the only location with spots still available.
PROGRAM DATES
September 21, 2026 – April 30, 2027
APPLICATION TIMELINE
- Opens: Monday, June 22, 2026
- Closes: Monday, June 29, 2026 or once capacity is reached
- Space is limited, and submitting an application does not guarantee placement
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Eligibility
- 18 years of age and older
- College students interested in Obstetrics and Maternity Services
- Non-students with prior experience in labor support
Volunteer Commitment
- Volunteer three 4-hour shifts per month (totaling a minimum of 80 hours for the full program)

- EDH + EUHM: 8 am-12 pm, 12-4 pm, 4-8 pm, 8 pm-12 am
- EJCH: 8 am-12 pm, 12-4 pm, 4-8 pm
- Shifts options vary by location (evening and weekend shifts are limited)

- Commit to serve from September 2026 - April 2027
- Missing two shifts without notice may result in dismissal from the program
ONBOARDING PROCESS
Application
- Submit the 2026 EHC Labor Support Volunteer Program Application, which includes the following required onboarding paperwork:
- Confidentiality Statement
- Acknowledgement of Privacy & Security Awareness
- Volunteer Standards of Conduct
- Emory Healthcare Volunteer Agreement
Interview
- Participate in an interview with the Emory Healthcare location for which you are being considered
- Interviews will take place via Zoom from July 13-24.
Health Screening
Complete an Occupational Health Assessment with an Emory Occupational Health Nurse, including:
- Tuberculosis screening (T‑SPOT blood test)
- Submission and review of current immunization records for:
- Varicella (chickenpox)
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
- Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
- Hepatitis B (vaccine series and titer)
- If documentation is unavailable, a titer blood test can be administered during the health assessment to verify immunity
- Information about scheduling the Occupational Health Assessment will be provided during the interview
Criminal Background Check
- Completed through Emory Healthcare’s screening partner, First Advantage, using their secure online portal
Labor Support Volunteer Orientation & Training
- Virtual New Volunteer Orientation
- Date: Fri., August 21
- Time: 1:00 - 3:00 PM
- Location: Virtual (Zoom)
- LSV Hands-On Training
- Date: Saturday, September 19
- Time: 10 am - 4 pm
- Location: Emory Decatur Hospital
- Attendance is mandatory
- Failure to attend orientation and/or training will result in removal from the program
PROGRAM LIMITATIONS
Volunteer Services does not offer shadowing, observation, internships, externships, or clinical hours opportunities.
