What being a volunteer with us involves
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with The Innovators’ Tea Party Inc.
We use the ‘BetterImpact’ platform to manage our cohort of 200+ volunteers. It takes about 5 minutes to sign up.
Once onboarded as a volunteer, you can be involved as much or as little as you like — from a single local event to multiple events throughout the year. We love welcoming volunteers back time after time, but we also appreciate ‘once off’ appearances!
We have two types of volunteering opportunities:
1. Women in STEM Mentors
For volunteers who identify as women and are working or studying in a STEM field. Our definition of STEM is broad — if you use maths or science as a tool in your work or studies, we’d love to have you. All pathways into STEM are welcome, whether tertiary‑qualified or not. Mentors speak at events, share their career stories, and engage directly with students.
2. Volunteer Event Helpers
For volunteers who want to support our events behind the scenes rather than present as a mentor. This role is ideal for people who don’t identify as women in STEM, or anyone who prefers to help with logistics, setup, registration, and general event support. This role is equally important, and we are actively seeking more volunteers in this area.
Training and support are provided for all volunteer roles.
How Volunteering Works
Once you submit this form, you’ll be able to view our events calendar through your Better Impact profile and sign up for events that interest you. Each term, we’ll also email a summary of upcoming opportunities.
To ensure each event showcases a diverse range of STEM careers, we may not select every volunteer for every event — please don’t take this personally. It simply helps us present a balanced mix of industries and pathways to students.
Steps to Get Involved
- Complete this application form to register.
- Browse the events calendar and sign up for sessions you’re interested in.
- We review all volunteers who have nominated for an event and select a team that represents a wide spread of STEM fields.
- If selected, you’ll receive an email with all event details and can then confirm your attendance.
About Our Events
We run two main event types:
- STEM Speed Networking One‑on‑one conversations with upper high‑school students, who rotate between many mentors during a fast-paced networking event. We love it when mentors bring along props or activities that are linked to their role to make the event a little more hands-on.
- “Inspire in 5” – a STEM career seminar where each mentor has just 5 minutes to tell their career story, followed by facilitated Q&A. This session is normally attended by middle school students and their families and sometimes hosted online. We provide a simple PowerPoint slide template that is used to prepare for your career story.
We also deliver school‑based events during school hours, which may include one or both formats depending on the school’s needs. Some regional opportunities are available.
Volunteers can opt in to events based on their preferred event type and availability.
Working With Children Checks
We require all volunteers to obtain a Working With Children Check. If you don’t have one already, then the postal address that you provide in the registration form will be used to post you the form when you sign up for your first event with us. As long as this is completed before your second time volunteering, this ensures compliance.
