Volunteer Guidelines
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Special Equestrians, Inc. We are a therapeutic riding program providing equine assisted activities and therapies to people with special needs in Lee, Charlotte, Hendry, and Glades Counties in Southwest Florida, since 1987. We are affiliated with and accredited by PATH Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). PATH certifies our instructors and provides therapeutic teaching techniques and safety standards which are adhered to in every aspect of our center’s programs and services. Key among them are:
- You must be at least 14 years old to become a volunteer with Special Equestrians.
- Background checks are required for all volunteers who are 18 years old or over.
- All new volunteers must complete an Orientation session where you learn about our center and the volunteer opportunities available.
- There are a variety of volunteer opportunities that you may consider and for which you will receive specific training.
- The majority of new volunteers begin as Sidewalkers. From there we offer additional training opportunities for Horse Leaders and other roles. Consideration of your physical ability to sidewalk and/or horse lead, along with instructors' and the Volunteer Coordinator's observations help determine the best role for you.
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes and neat comfortable clothing must be worn during your volunteer time. This is for the safety of the humans and horses.
