B&NES Libraries Volunteering Policies

Part 1:  You can expect Bath & North East Somerset Council to;

  • Provide you with an appropriate induction and ongoing training for the volunteering activity that you are undertaking
  • Explain the standards, policies and procedures we expect for our service and help you to achieve and maintain them
  • Provide a named person who will meet with you regularly to discuss your volunteering and any successes and problems
  • Reimburse you for reasonable expenses such as travel costs associated with carrying out your volunteering activity
  • Provide you with the necessary health and safety training to ensure that you can carry out the volunteering activity in a safe manner
  • Ensure that you are covered by the Council’s insurance whilst carrying out your volunteering activity
  • Ensure you are treated fairly and in accordance with our equal opportunities policy
  • Ensure that any problems, complaints or difficulties that you might be having are resolved swiftly and in accordance with Council policy
  • Do our best to make sure your volunteering experience with the Council is enjoyable and rewarding.

 Part 2:  We expect you to:

  • Perform your volunteering role to the best of your ability.
  • Adhere to all Bath & North East Somerset council policies & procedures, including; health and safety, data protection, equalities, code of conduct and any relevant professional guidelines.
  • Be willing to undertake any training deemed necessary to carry out your role.
  • Maintaining the Library Services commitment to Safeguarding by being aware and proactive in discussing any safeguarding concerns with colleagues.
  • Meet the time commitments and standards which have been mutually agreed and to give reasonable notice so other arrangements can be made when this is not possible.
  • Be courteous, friendly and willing to offer support and assistance to colleagues and customers.

Data Protection:

Your contact details, health information and emergency contact details will be kept securely by B&NES Libraries to enable communication and support between yourself, your line manager and the volunteer co-ordinator and will be retained according to the Retention Schedule, which can be viewed upon request. We may also use the details to contact you in future regarding volunteering opportunities.

You must update the Library Service if your contact details change and inform the service of any health issues which may require some additional support and inform the Library Service if you wish your details to be removed from use in the future.

This agreement is binding in honour only, is not intended to be a legally binding contract between the Council and the volunteer and may be cancelled at any time, without notice by either party. Neither party intends any employment relationship to be created either now or at any time in the future.
