DSS Volunteer Guidelines and Code of Conduct

Dignity Seniors Society greatly values the commitment, time and effort contributed by its volunteers. This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations DSS has of its volunteers, and highlighted below are the volunteer rights and responsibilities. Please review this document as part of your volunteer commitment to ensure that DSS standards of service to seniors and service providers are honoured.

Volunteer Rights

As part of DSS values, our commitment to you as a volunteer is to ensure that:

  • You are treated with fairness, courtesy and respect.
  • You feel safe and supported.
  • You are offered suitable volunteer opportunities.
  • You are kept informed about DSS as much as possible through updates during meetings, the website, social media and newsletters.
  • You are given an appropriate orientation, sound guidance and direction as needed.
  • You are given appropriate recognition.

Volunteer Responsibilities

As part of their commitment, volunteers have responsibilities. As a DSS volunteer, I will:

  • Respect the rights and views of DSS board members, volunteers, partners, and associates, and treat them with fairness, courtesy and respect.
  • Not engage in any form of harassment or discrimination based on race, colour, place of origin, citizenship, political or religious affiliations, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age, health or economic status, diverse ability, or criminal justice system involvement.
  • Make every effort to follow through on my commitments to DSS; if I am unable to meet a commitment, I will notify my position lead as soon as possible.
  • Seek clarification from DSS if I have questions or concerns related to my involvement.
  • Refer inquiries about DSS governance or management to the appropriate staff/board members.
  • Not engage with any form of public media (including print, broadcast and social media) related to any aspect of DSS except in situations where I’ve been authorized to do so by DSS.
  • Hold in confidence any sensitive information obtained through my volunteer role at DSS. This includes internal correspondence, financial information, unpublished research or reports.

I understand that failure to adhere to any or all parts of this code may result in my suspension and/or the termination of my volunteer involvement with DSS.
