Commitments and Understandings
NOTE: Opportunities are generally available weekdays, between 8am-4pm. Evenings and weekend options are limited.
Requirements for all Island Health Volunteers include:
To protect people who access Island Health services, we take steps to ensure volunteers do not pose a risk of harm. One requirement is participation in the online B.C. Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP), which gives applicants a free and confidential way to confirm they have no relevant history of physical, sexual, or financial abuse of vulnerable adults or children.
Receive an annual flu vaccination or wear a mask during flu season, which is approximately December to April.
If you are in Canada on a student or work visa, your visa must be valid for at least nine months from the date of your interview and must allow you to volunteer in healthcare settings without conditions. Unfortunately, we cannot accept visitor visas for volunteer roles.
Volunteer Commitment:
Complete online training, which takes approximately 2-4 hours. Additional onsite training is provided after acceptance. Volunteer hours will be recorded for all training.
Availability to volunteer regularly, typically 2–4 hours per week. With exceptions for vacations and other life events.
Intend to volunteer for a minimum of six months.
For English language learners, we respectfully request that applicants meet Canadian Language Benchmark level 6 or higher in listening and speaking before applying. This helps ensure volunteers can understand and communicate important health and safety information while volunteering in our facilities. If you are unsure of your level, this assessment tool may help you determine your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level.
